Blog backup

Dear all,

If you are here, reading my blog, it just points to a few things, which I could contemplate. You are :

  • An ardent blogger, with an acute interest in blogging
  • A fleeting blog reader looking for some interesting reads in the internet
  • A searching blogger, who has issued a search in some search engine, looking for ways to make back ups of your blog posts

In any case, that you are here, reading my composition, I’d like to introduce, and advertise my Blog Backup software. Its completely free, and Open Source. I haven’t released the source code to the world yet! I am awaiting some major feedback from the users, the changes that would go into the final version. Yes, wine indeed gets better with time, and software is no different. Well, hold on to your hats. I don’t mean that the software is buggy. I regularly use this tool to make incremental back ups of the blog that you currently are reading. I am addressing the feature enhancements that some users have requested, which I am still compiling. These requests shall be made available in the final release in a few weeks time.

The history of this tool is pretty straight forward. I was looking for means to secure my writings in my blog, and that I did not find any, I decided to create my own Blog backup tool. I sat through the winter of 2008, and wrote some software in Java, that I have posted here, for the world to use. I used NetBeans IDE for development, and the tool runs on any machine that has a Java runtime environment (JRE), which you could download from www.sun.com. So, the tool is basically for free. That is my way of contributing a little to the development of mankind!

I am not posting any screenshots, or am delving into the usage here. It should be pretty straight forward. If it is not, please drop me an e.mail. I shall try to make it easier for the end users. The software is available for the Windows platform, but if you intend to use it on Solaris/Linux/Mac, it is possible. Please do let me know of your request via an e.mail, and I shall upload it to the download URL.

If you are happy with my tool, please do send me a note of acknowledgement. If you are a blogger with some happy experiences using this tool, please do back link to this post. I could always use your inputs, and some advertisement.

Some pre-requisites :

  1. Windows platform for the installer
  2. Java Virtual machine (or simply, Java Runtime Environment, the JRE), which you could download from here
  3. Blog, which you intend to backup. The tool is pretty democratic, in that you could make backups of blogs, even those that are not your own. I have created this tool hoping that you aren’t violating any copyright issues. If you are a legal personnel, please do point me to the right legal points that restrict the tool’s usage. I shall be glad to incorporate them, but do not promise immediate action, without a thorough evaluation of the impact of modification

Thanks for your time reading this blog post, and I hope that you’d be happy to use my creation. If you profit from this post, and the tool, you may consider spreading the word by :

  1. Recommending this post to your family, friends, and colleagues
  2. Back linking to this post, or the tool’s URL
  3. Recommending this tool by word of mouth
  4. Or, any innovative mechanism you possibly could consider..
